Spencerport to hold Budget Hearing/Meet the Candidates night

The Spencerport Central School District will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2013-14 budget on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the District Office building on Lyell Ave.

Superintendent Michael Crumb will give a presentation on the proposed $71.8 million budget, which reflects a 2.2% increase in the true value tax rate.

In addition to the budget, the two propositions up for voter approval will also be reviewed.

As part of the Meet the Candidates Night, Spencerport High School students, Jake Sweely (Senior Class President) and Justin Burr (Student Government President) will be facilitating this part of the meeting with the two candidates running unopposed for two board of education openings.

Harlem Wizards come to Brockport

The Harlem Wizards are coming to Brockport. The Harlem Wizards are similiar to the Harlem Globetrotters, both like to entertain the crowd using a variety of basketball tricks and alley oops. 

The Harlem Wizards will be at  the Oliver Middle School Gym on Friday May 17 at 7:00p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and may be purchased online at www.harlemwizards.com. If not sold out, tickets will be available at the door for $12 for adults and $10 for children. A limited number of floor seats are available for $25(including a meet and greet and photo session with the Wizards prior to the game). Brockport senior wins Fulbright Award

A senior at The College at Brockport has been named a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Student Award.

Laura Clark, a Spanish and Women and Gender Studies double major, will go to Spain for 10 months after she graduates from Brockport. She will serve as an English teaching assistant in a classroom. Marcy is a native of Marcy, N.Y.

The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” Recipients are chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, and are provided with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

 

Man sentenced in deadly crash in Hamlin

A man will spend the next one to three years in prison for his role in a deadly crash in Hamlin in June 2011.

Jacob Stevens was sentenced Monday morning on charges of vehicular manslaughter, aggravated assault and driving while ability impaired by marijuana. He previously pleaded guilty in February.

Stevens was driving westbound on Church Road with Danielle Gowanlock of Holley when he failed to stop at the stop sign on Lake Road. Another vehicle hit the passenger side of Stevens’ vehicle. Gowanlock was taken to the hospital after the crash but was later pronounced dead.

Four finalists selected for Newark CSD superintendent

The Board of Education in the Newark Central School District has chosen four finalists in its search for a superintendent when current superintendent, Henry Hann, retires this summer.

The four candidates – Dr. Mary Aronson, Brett Provenzano, Matt Cook and Nelson Kise – will visit the schools in the district to tour the schools and meet with students, staff and community groups throughout the day before having dinner with and meeting with members of the Board of Education.

Schedule:
Aronson will visit on May 13
Provenzano will visit on May 20
Cook will visit on May 21
Kise will visit on May 22

Greater Brockport Development Corporation elects new officers

The Greater Brockport Development Corporation Board of Directors elected new officers for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

The board elected former Brockport Mayor Josephine C. Matela to serve as the vice president. Matela has been a member of the board since 2002 and previously served as president. She was the secretary during the previous year. She replaces William Andrews, who will remain as a director on the board.

Jacqueline Davis was elected as secretary. She replaces Matela. Davis has been on the board since September 2012 and served as its treasurer for the balance of the last fiscal year.

The Board did not elect a treasurer. They are waiting until they fill one of three  vacancies with an individual whose background is well suited to assist with the organization's financial reporting requirements. The president, Jack Kinnicutt, is overseeing the search for candidates.

Brockport's "How to Succeed in Business" recognized by RBTL's "Stars of Tomorrow"

Rochester Broadway Theatre League's Stars of Tomorrow recently held its annual recognition ceremony that celebrates high school musical theatre productions in the greater Rochester area.

The Stars of Tomorrow made its debut in the greater Rochester area in 1999. Local high schools with fall and spring productions are invited to participate in the program. Schools are divided into four divisions based on school populations and judges are assigned specific divisions.  Areas of concentration are scored, and awards are given to schools or individuals with the highest scores within each category.
