Dady Brothers to play benefit concert at the Aquinas Institute

The Aquinas Institute, 1127 Dewey Ave., Rochester, will host a benefit concert for the Aurora House featuring Celtic and American folk band The Dady Brothers at 3 p.m. May 5.

The band, which consists of brothers John and Joe Dady, will feature performances of Irish ballads and contemporary folk songs with a number of popular folk instruments including the guitar, fiddle, banjo and harmonica.

The concert is open to the public and tickets will be available at the door. The event will help support the operation of the Aurora House, a non-profit organization located in Spencerport that provides support and care for the dying and their loved ones.

Brockport Symphony Orchestra and the Golden Eagle String Band present Canal Opening Celebration

The Brockport Symphony Orchestra and the Golden Eagle String Band will present a Canal Opening Celebration concert on Sunday at 4 pm in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, located on Residence Drive on the Brockport campus. 

The concert will be the grand finale of the “Low Bridge, High Water” celebration, sponsored by the Village of Brockport. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Under the baton of Jonathan Allentoff, the concert will feature three canal-themed works. The Golden Eagle String Band will open the concert with a traditional selection entitled, “The Canal Boatman’s Dance.” The String Band will then join the Brockport Symphony Orchestra and narrator Bill Andrews in performing Allentoff’s “Erie Canal Rhapsody.”

Blood drive to be held in honor of Laurie LoMonaco

Two blood drives will be held in honor of Laurie LoMonaco – a local blood and kidney donor.

The drives will be on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Brockport Fireman’s Exempt Club and on Thursday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Seymour College Union Ballroom at The College at Brockport.

LoMonaco donated her kidney in January 2013 and the recipient now has another chance to live. Her first blood donation was in high school but this will be her first scheduled blood donation since donating her kidney.

Section V high school officiating group seeking new members for 2013 season

Are you a retired football player or coach?  Do you love the game of football? Maybe you should consider becoming a football official.

Section V high school officiating group is looking for new members for the 2013 season. The organization, the Rochester Chapter of Certified Football Officials, trains new referees to meet state certification, conducts fingerprinting and assigns new members to youth and sub-varsity high school games, on way to working varsity high schools games in Monroe, Ontario, Genesee, Livingston counties and the southern tier.

Officials are paid for the games they work and receive a mileage reimbursement.

The Rochester Chapter of Certified Football Officials has produced outstanding officials, many who have advanced to and currently work in Division I College, the United Football League and the NFL. These men have worked state championships, college bowl games and NFL playoffs, including, NFC Championships and a Super Bowl.

Spencerport United Methodist to hold chicken barbeque

Spencerport United Methodist Church will be holding a chicken barbeque on Saturday May 18 from 3:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. 

The meal includes half-chicken, potato, coleslaw or applesauce, roll and dessert.

Prices are $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and $5.00 for children(under 10).
