Checklist to Used Car Buying: More people buy used as the value of pre-owned vehicles increases

Gates Automotive Center has seen an increase in the number of recently purchased used-vehicles that come through the doors of their garage. Fewer people are buying new cars, and the demand and price for used cars is increasing. Kelley Blue Book predicts the new-car sales and leasing slumps of recent years will impact used-car values for years to come. According to Kelley Blue Book’s figures, the average value of a 1 to 3-year-old used vehicle has increased from $15,000 in 2008 to more than $23,000 in 2011, an average increase of 16 percent each year.

Buying a used vehicle right now might make the most sense financially, but Gates Automotive Center President Jim Fonzi warns there are risks that come along with purchasing a pre-owned vehicle. The buyer might think they’re getting a deal, but they could be inheriting a slew of costly repair issues.
