Fallen Army Captain honored upon return

The body of Captain Bruce Kevin Clark who died last week in Afghanistan arrived home early Saturday morning to a warm welcome from friends, family and complete strangers.

Army investigators are still looking into the Captain’s death after being told by his wife he had collapsed during their Skype conversation.

The precession was said to be close to a mile long and lead by the Patriot Guard Riders to a funeral home in Spencerport. One by one they came in from all over the state they came from all over the state.

Its not where Captain Clark was born, but its a place he considered home.

Ogden Parks and Recreation will be hosting VROOM VROOM on Saturday, May 12, 2012!

The FREE event will take place at Pineway Ponds Park from 10:00am-12:00pm.

Vroom Vroom is an event where children and their families will have the chance to see and touch many different forms of transportation while meeting the people who operate them! Some of the vehicles that will be present may include dump trucks, tractors, police cars, garbage trucks, fire trucks, and more!

Help improve gas mileage with spring maintenance for your Vehicle

As the seasons and weather changes, drivers will start hitting the roads for vacation. Winter salt, temperatures and pot holes can wreak havoc on your vehicle, so before you head out for spring break it’s a good idea to give your vehicle a maintenance check-up. Gates Automotive Center offers these maintenance tips that will make your road-trip a little more worry free and can save you some money at the gas pump.

Tune-up- Taking your vehicle to a mechanic for a tune up can help your car perform more efficiently and get better gas mileage. A tune-up should consist of checking brakes, wheel alignment and battery, which all take a beating during the winter. Your cooling system should also be checked. According to fueleconomy.gov, fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, which is a savings of $.15 per gallon based on a fuel price of $3.87 per gallon.

Christopher's Challenge Hike for Life

Two men who lost their lives to cancer will be honored this weekend at the 11th Annual Hike for Life, sponsored Christopher’s Challenge and Strong’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program on Sunday, March 25. The Hike for Life will be held in memory of Gene Martello, from Seneca Falls, and Tony Canali, from Canandaigua. Both men were in need of bone marrow transplants, and were dedicated supporters of Christopher's Challenge and believed in the mission of getting more people typed to be potential bone marrow donors.

Tony Canali, a guidance counselor and rugby and indoor track coach for McQuaid Jesuit, lost his battle with AML Leukemia in 2009 on his 60th birthday. Gene Martello passed away in 2006 after a brave fight with multiple myeloma. Gene’s son, Mark Martello, became a bone marrow donor last year after taking part in a bone marrow drive at a Christopher’s Challenge Hike for Life the previous year. He is hoping to meet his recipient soon.

Music celebrates Rochester's connection to Russia

For the sixth year in a row, the Eastman Community Music School (ECMS) and Linkages of Rochester Inc. are collaborating on a special “Russian-American Friendship” concert. The annual free event features music by Russian composers and celebrates the connection with Rochester’s sister city Velikiy Novgorod.

The concert is held in the first week of January (the Russian Orthodox celebrate Christmas on January 7 according to the Julian Calendar) and this year it’s on Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. Besides music by ECMS faculty and students, there’ll be an exhibit of works by local artist Rand Darrow, who writes, illustrates, and composes music for his own stories based on Slavic mythology. In addition, concert patrons will see photographs of Novgorod, which is located in northwest Russia and dates back to the 10th century.

Eastman Community Music School's Homecoming Celebrates the Holidays

Did you ever take classes at the Eastman Community Music School? Well, even if you didn’t, everyone’s welcome to the School’s annual “Holiday Homecoming” this Saturday (Dec. 17).

The celebration includes concerts in several different locations around Eastman, starting at 9 a.m. and going till about 6:30. They’re free and feature ensembles of all ages, from middle school through adult. And you can enjoy all types of music, like holiday favorites, jazz, musical theatre, and classical, and all types of instruments: guitar, trumpet, hammered dulcimer, flute, harp, marimba, trombone, saxophone, cello, and the human voice.

Check out the online schedule, and stop by and enjoy the performances. If you’re not a student yet, you might just want to start some classes next month!
