School budget vote held Tuesday

New York residents are voting on their school districts' proposed budgets for next year.

Authorities say the average proposed tax levy increase is 2.8-percent, with school spending rising about the same amount, driven by increases in contributions to employee retirement systems.

This is the second year school districts are working under New York's tax cap law, which generally limits tax levy increases to 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.  Budget proposals that exceed the cap need a 60 percent supermajority of votes to pass.

The New York State School Boards Association says about 96 percent of districts are staying within the cap, with most of them drawing on reserve funds to be able to do that without further cuts in programs and services.

Girl Scouts Troop 60040 and Rochester ZUMBA community hold Zumbatomic event for migrant workers

For their bronze award action project, Girl Scout Troop 60040 in Henrietta, along with the help of ten certified Zumba instructors are hosting the first Zumbatomic event in Rochester.

Zumbatomic is a class designed for children between the ages of 4 and 12-years-old. It has the same dance and music styles as a regular Zumba Fitness class, but the routines are designed for kids.

The event will be Saturday May 18 from 1:30p.m. to 3:30p.m. at the Good Sheppard School Gymnasium on E. Henrietta Road in Henrietta.

There is no monetary admission, but the girl scouts ask that you bring gently used clean clothing, shoes, blankets and non perishable food items. They will be collecting them for the Brockport Ecumenical Food and Clothing Shelf, which will be given to the migrant workers and their families.

There will also be an opportunity for girls to learn about the Girl Scout Program.
