Brockport hangout takes down Penn State memorabilia | News
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
A local hangout for Penn State fans is expressing its views on the recent sex scandal at the university. The Stoneyard Bar and Grill in Brockport has taken down all its Penn State memorabilia.
The general manager told News 10 NBC he's still a Penn State fan, but out of respect for the victims involved in this tragedy, he and the restaurant owner thought it would be best to make some changes to the bar's decor.
By the looks of it now, you'd never know the Stoneyard Bar and Grill is a hangout for Penn State football fans.
“You can notice it kind of looks empty in here right now”, says Britton Kolb, the general manager.
He isn't talking about the seats. He's referring to the walls, “basically what we had here on this wall was a portrait of the Nittany Lion.”
Kolb and the owner decided to take the decorations down on Monday, “it was more out of respect for the victims and families.” And Kolb says the customers are noticing the changes. Changes he says, fans seem to support.
“We still support the team on the field, but its probably not a good idea to be celebrating right now, and I think the hard core Penn State fans would agree with that.”
One Penn State alum in total agreement is local radio host John Ditullio, “I am angry, I am sad”.
Ditullio, who sometimes hangs out at the Stoneyard, has been talking about the controversy on his show for days. He says, “this story is dominating everything.”
And it's a story he says hits home for him in many ways, “as a father, I can't help but think of my kids, and as an alumni, I felt I was betrayed.”
And although Kolb doesn't expect this to affect the bar's business in any way, he says it was important to do the right thing, “it was just terrible what happened and what's going on there so we decided- it’s best to take the stuff down for now.”
Britton says he and the owner haven't decided what to do with the walls at this point. That's a decision they'll make down the road.
