Regional Science Olympiad at St. John Fisher College

Three hundred students representing 16 Rochester-area middle schools will be at St. John Fisher College to participate in the 2012 Regional Science Olympiad Competition on Saturday, February 25.

The competition will determine the area’s top students in the field of science.

A total of 22 teams have been preparing since September to compete in 20 events in the fields of engineering, biology, physical science, and problem solving.

It is one of several regional competitions in New York State, which act as a preliminary round to the state competition to be held on April 20th and April 21st at SUNY Ulster. The two winning teams in the state competition move on to the national competition in May.

The History of the Rochester Weather Station

When I visit schools, I’m often asked how I became interested in the weather. Observing the weather as a high school student and as a college student studying meteorology at Lyndon State College in Vermont played a very important role in my professional growth. Growing up in eastern Massachusetts, I had many opportunities to be an eyewitness to a number of major weather events like Hurricane Gloria in 1985, and the March “Superstorm” of 1993.  I also had the unique opportunity and privilege to work at and intern at the Blue Hill Observatory, which holds the title for the longest, most homogeneous climate record in the United States. They’ve never missed a day of weather observations since April 1, 1885. Now that’s what I call dedication!

The ceremony will begin at 7:30pm. To watch it online, go to www.spencerportschools.org. Once on the home page, look for a quick link button on the bottom right of the page that says "2011 graduation ceremony".

Clicking on this link will bring you to the page that has the live feed. From 7:30 - 8 p.m., viewers will see the video created by members of the senior class and at 8 p.m., the actual ceremony will take place. Any questions, please call the district's technology office at 349-5161.

Social media impact on Chris Lee's sudden resignation

Social media impact on Chris Lee's sudden resignation

The Chris Lee scandal hit the internet Wednesday afternoon. By 6 p.m., he resigned.

Experts say it's proof of the lightning fast impact of the internet and social media websites. Ironically, Lee presented himself as a congressman able to master the potential of social media but in some ways it was also his undoing.

Media experts call the increasing speed of information -- the news diffusion theory and it goes like this. After President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, it took three months for some parts of the country to find out about it. After president Kennedy was assassinated, it took six hours for 90-percent of the country to hear the news. Now in 2011, it's a matter of minutes.

The Chris Lee scandal started, peaked and ended in less time than it takes for some football games.

Many have wondered if it's because of the internet and social media websites but media experts disagree.

Crossing Over....

Crossing Over....

Every computer I’ve ever owned has always been a PC running Windows or something similar to Windows (Linux).  That’s what real computer users do.  The “Macs” were just an over-priced toy coveted by a fanatical minority cult.  Well, (probably) due to the recent reconfiguring of astrological signs, I lost focus and bought an iPad – and I am sorry…very sorry…

Using Apps & Extensions in the Google Chrome Browser

Continuing with our discussion on the Chrome Browser, let's go a bit deeper into ways to customize this browser using apps and extensions.

Chrome - Google's Entry In The Browser Wars

Chrome - Google's Entry In The Browser Wars

After the Windows vs. Mac war has been waged, the second most "debated" issue among computer users is which internet browser is best.  For a variety of reasons I have typically recommended Microsoft's Internet Explorer to my clients using Windows...but that may be changing.  I've been using  the latest version of Google's Chrome browser (Version 8.0 released earlier this month) for a while now and I've found it to be better than Internet Explorer in its overall performance, available features and user interface.
